Canal City Hakata
Located alongside the Hakata River, at the midpoint between Hakata station and Tenjin, this huge multi-purpose complex is a kaleidoscopic mixture of innovative buildings constructed around a canal that flows through the center of the facility. It's an entertainment paradise, with gourmet dining, fashionable shopping, a cinema complex with 13 theaters, and even two hotels.

Kushida Shrine
The main tutelary shrine of Hakata, Kushida Shrine is said to have been built in the eighth century. The shrine is the starting point of the Oiyama race held on the last day of the Hakata Gion Yamagasa Festival, one of the summer's main events in the city of Fukuoka. The Hakata Historical Museum within the shrine displays materials on the history and culture of Hakata as well as the shrine's treasures and the local Kazariyama (decorated floats).

Hakatamachiya Furusatokan
The old town of Hakata, its way of life and culture during the Meiji and Taisho periods are replicated as an exhibition museum, with full-scale models and audiovisual displays.

Nakasu
Literally meaning "sandbank," Nakasu is Kyushu's largest entertainment district. In the evening, neon signs reflect romantically on the waters of the Nakagawa River which runs adjacent to the area. The historic Kawabata district and the newly opened "Canal City Hakata" and "Hakata Riverain" create an interesting contrast of the old living beside the new.

Yatai
Yatai(s) are open-air food stalls. At dusk, the streets gradually become festive as the stalls' lamps are lit one by one. Yatai mainly operate along the Nakagawa River along Nakasu, Showa and Watanabe Avenues in Tenjin. They serve a variety of unique meals, so venturing out to sample a few might be an interesting experience.

Hakata Riverain
Located on the lower reaches of the Hakatagawa River, this futuristic combination of commerce and culture comprises an interesting selection of world class designer brands, gourmet dining and the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum. It also houses the Hakata-za Theater and a hotel, and is rapidly gaining popularity as a new business and cultural center with a pleasant waterfront vista.

Fukuoka Asian Art Museum
This museum is the first in the world to collect and exhibit both modern and contemporary Asian art works. There is a gallery exhibiting a wide range of Asian art and also an art information corner.

Hakozaki Shrine
Along with Usa and Iwashimizu shrines, Hakozaki Shrine is regarded as one of the three main Hachiman shrines of Japan. It holds festivals such as Hojoya in the fall and Tamaseseri near New Year's Day, attracting worshippers from across the country.

Uminonakamichi Seaside Park
Literally meaning "middle path in the sea," Uminonakamichi Park sits upon a sandbank that divides Hakata Bay and the Genkainada Sea. It is comprised of a resort and amusement section and a natural gardens area.

Bayside Place Hakata

Fukuoka Castle Ruins
This once vast castle was the original headquarters of the feudal domain of Chikuzen, and is now open to the public as Maizuru Park. Original stone walls and waterways still remain, and the site of the great donjon is today an observatory platform overlooking Hakata Bay.

Ohori Park
A beautiful park constructed around a lake that imitates the famous West Lake of China, Ohori Park's primary feature has willows and azaleas lining the two kilometer path that hugs the lakeside. Both joggers and locals simply out for a stroll are attracted to the area.

Ruins of Fortifications Against the Mongolian Invasion
At the end of the 13th century, Japan was attacked twice by the Yuan Dynasty. The nation united and successfully warded off the aggressors and parts of the ruins from that period can still be seen at the Momochi District alongside Hakata Bay.

Seaside Momochi
The seaside area facing Hakata Bay has recently been seeing rapid development recently. Modern skyscrapers dot the artificial beach, with landmark buildings such as Fukuoka Tower; Marizon, a resort compound pushing out onto the bay; and Hawks Town with Fukuoka Dome (home of the 'Hawks' local baseball team) as its main structure. There are also offices and residential buildings, making for an image of ultra-modern urbanity.

One of the nation's largest multi-function complexes, Hawks Town is located in the Momochi District and is the home of Fukuoka's franchise pro baseball team, the Fukuoka Soft Bank Hawks. The dome is famous for its retractable roof which was the first such roof built in Japan. The Hawks Town Mall consists of a cinema, live music house, game center, shops and restaurants. The JAL Resort Sea Hawk Hotel Fukuoka adjacent to Fukuoka Yahoo! Japan Dome offers all the possible enjoyment of being in an urban resort.

Fukuoka Tower
The 234m high Fukuoka Tower is the tallest seaside tower in Japan. Islands dotting Hakata Bay and the city of Fukuoka are all below you as you look out from the observation area 123m above ground level.

Fukuoka City Museum
The Fukuoka City Museum displays the history of Fukuoka and its contact with the ancient Chinese culture via the abundant materials on display here. Kin-in, or Gold Seals, discovered in Shikanoshima, and many locally unearthed articles from the Nara and Heian Periods are also displayed.

Marinoa City Fukuoka
Marinoa City Fukuoka is Kyushu's first and thus largest outlet shopping mall. Featuring shops selling men's and women's fashions, children's clothing, furniture, interior goods and outdoor goods there should be something here for the whole family. Two enormous Ferris wheels, "Skywheel" on the actual mall site, and "Sky Dream Fukuoka" standing in the adjacent facility named "Evergreen Marinoa," serve as its easily identifiable landmarks.

Yanagibashi Joint Market Union
Well known as "the kitchen of Hakata," the food market comprising a number of individual food vendors is a ten-minute bus ride from Hakata Station and Tenjin. Rare seafood from the Seas of Genkainada and Ariakekai as well as Hakata specialties such as mentaiko, or spicy cod roe, are local items sold here.
