Kodai-ji Temple was established by Nene, often known by the title Kita no Mandokoro, who had taken the name Kodai-in. She was the widow of The samurai warrior, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and established this temple to pray for her late husband. The interior of the temple was decorated with elaborate gold and silver lacquer work, called Makie in the 16th century, which explains why it is also called "Makie's Temple." |

With Kamogawa River to the west, and the land of Higashiyama to the east, is Gion. Prosperous as the town in front of Yasaka Shrine, Gion has tea houses which serve alcohol and are visited by Geisha. Tea houses are lined eaves to eaves with a thousand red treillage and the tone of the shamisen spills out from the shop curtains. |

Kiyomizudera Temple is a prominent Buddhist Temple of Kyoto. The temple covers a wide area of 130,000 square meters. The main temple of Kiyomizu is famous for its so-called "Kiyomizu-dera stage" which was reproduced in 1633. This stage was built using 139 columns to jut over a precipice, and from it the whole city can be taken in at a glance. Below the cliff of the temple a clear stream spills into a waterfall. Within the precincts are cherry blossoms which bloom in spring and leaves which turn red in autumn. The temple is registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site. |

Ginkakuji Temple was constructed in 1482 by Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the 8th Shogun of the Ashikaga Shogunate. The then culture of Higashiyama is well displayed in and around Ginkakuji and of particular beauty and import is the garden. Said to imitate that of Saihoji Temple, Ginkakuji's gardens are ideal for strolling with its small pond, hillside location and small waterfall all playing their part.
To view the Togudo (Buddha Hall) is permitted only to groups of over 20 persons and is possible only on the 2nd or 4th Saturdays of the month. Prior application by return postcard is essential and no English is spoken.
Ginkakuji is registered as a World Cultural Heritage site. |
